Orange Lutheran (Calif.) offensive lineman Jason White flipped his commitment from Boise State to Oregon State and broke down why he chose the Beavers.
"I'm really excited about my decision," White said. "Looking back at it, I'm really glad I didn't sign in December. It just felt rushed for me, even though I had already committed to Boise State a few months earlier.
"I wanted to take more time and make sure I was doing the right thing and it worked out perfectly. Coach Harsin left for Auburn just a week or two later and I really didn't know what my situation was with them moving forward. I wasn't sure if the old OL coach would stay or go and if they brought in a new one, I didn't know if they would want me so I backed off my commitment around that time."
White said the Oregon State coaching staff never backed off him and that meant a lot to him.
"I had a few new schools who jumped in there late," White said. "Baylor came pretty hard and I also heard from BYU, UNLV and even Oklahoma. I just felt most comfortable at Oregon State thought with those coaches.
"They were really loyal to me and that meant a lot. Michael Pitre was my main recruiter and I talked a lot with coach Jim (Michalczik) and like those guys a lot. I actually committed about a week ago but just kept it silent so I could announce it today. I really feel great and I'm excited to be in the Pac-12. I'll be able to play against USC and UCLA every year and my family can come see me any time so it's a great fit for sure."
White said even without visiting Oregon State, he still feels good about the campus and his comfort level there.
"Corvallis looks like a great city," White said. "I did several zoom calls and virtual tours and it looks like a safe place to live and that's important to me and my family. It's a college town and a great environment to be in and I can't wait to get started."
White wasn't able to play football as a senior but is hoping to end high school on a high note on the track. As a sophomore, he was one of the state's top shot put throwers and won League finals with a 49'5 personal best.
"I'm hoping to win state this year," White said. "I have the 3rd best throw in school history and that's from my sophomore year. I wasn't able to compete last year when the season was canceled so I'm really excited for track this hear and hoping to go out on a high note."
From an athletic standpoint, they don't come much better then White. At the NorCal Opening Regional Camp prior to his junior season, he clocked a 5.14-40, 4.71 shuttle and jumped 28” in the vertical. He's 6-4, 275 pounds, has an 81" wing span and if he maximizes his potential, there's no doubt he has an NFL upside to him.

The Square Meal Market, at 163 W. Evans St., is set to open in a couple of months. The restaurant will have customizable meals, "detox water," a grab-and-go market and self-service kiosks.
Shealyn Williamson, co-owner of the Square Meal Market, said the restaurant will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner to Florence residents.
“We want to offer three squares meals a day to people working and in the downtown area,” Williamson said. “We wanted a low price point and a customizable menu. We wanted to be able to help the people working here every day with a healthy spin on it.”
The restaurant will have several customizable power bowls, artisan sandwiches, salads, burgers and many handcrafted sides. Every item will come with a “base” and then customers will be able to add vegetables, protein, garnish and sauces to their entrée.
Williamson said she is excited for the Florence community to try the “detox waters” that the restaurant will have in addition to normal drinks.
“We’re going to have a detox lemonade that has a little bit of cayenne in it to help cleanse you,” Williamson said. “We’re going to have cucumber mint water and then every month, we will rotate different detox waters.”
Williamson said the downtown location — where Boxcar Market was previously located — was the perfect place to open The Square Meal Market.
“We saw a lot of restaurants downtown, but we didn’t see anything that was quick service,” Williamson said. “We really liked its placement on West Evans. It’s easy access with a front and back entrance. Boxcar was very successful, so we wanted to keep some of the aspects from them. We’re going to have a market up front where people can grab and go and purchase things like bacon jam, cookie butter and tortilla chips.”
The restaurant will introduce self-serve kiosks where customers can place their orders and pay for their items through the new technology. Currently, the business is working on finishing up permits and renovating the building.
Williamson said being able to balance meals is an important aspect to living a healthy lifestyle.
“When I had just graduated, I was working nonstop and I wasn’t really able to balance my meals,” Williamson said. “My breakfast, lunch and dinner was really scattered. I started doing meal planning and that really helped me. So, we want people to be able to come to our restaurant and have the meals prepared for them.”
